Well, I have a new love. Ok, its not so new. I was introduced to Les Miserables in my 9th grade band class. It was love at first watch. We were playing an arrangement of several of the key songs and our director, the wonderful Mr. Murray, wanted us to hear the music before we began to play. So he made us watch the 10th Anniversary Edition. In essence, subtitles were placed on the screen to tell the audience what was happening in the play at the time. Then an actor or actress or even both came up and sang the song that went along with the scene. The songs, the actors, the emotion, all of it put together, made me fall in love.
Ok so I said I only had three passions in life, why am I talking about musicals? Well, Victor Hugo wrote the book, Les Miserables in 1862. Now, I will be honest. I have never read this book. First off, the book is bigger than some Bibles. As much as I love reading, I do not think that I could read that amount of pages right now in my life (stupid higher education taking up all of my time). The other reason is that although I love love love the play, I really don't have the desire to read it right now. I have rarely found a movie ever being the to the equivalent book that was inspired by it. This in mind, many a movie has been ruined for me because I am too critical. But that is for another time. Anyway, I do not think I could read that book without my opinion of the movie or play to be altered forever.
But back to the music. I fell in love! The emotion portrayed by these "miserable" characters, whether it was Fantine singing about her high dreams that have been crushed or Jean Valijean arguing with the guard during the work song. Even Eponine's "On My Own" brings goosebumps to my skin. But my favorite song ever is "I Dreamed a Dream."
I like to pretend that I can sing. Therefore, I sing this song quite often, wishing I had voice like Ruthie Henshall. It just so happened that I began singing this song as I walked into the bathroom that all the girl's on my floor share. I thought I was alone. That is until I heard a giggle. Ugh. Embarrassment!
Moral of the story, check the bathroom throughly BEFORE singing. :D
